Jam Postmortem

Another month, another jam. Last month I created Transliminal Space and the month before that Latter-Day Pamphlets. Also, much earlier in the year, I released Dreams of Gold. For some good reasons and more bad ones, this year has been my jam era. As we enter 2024, I'm going to be doing a lot of things differently. This, alas, will be one of them. For those of you who have played these things, thank you. Finishing has been a reward in and of itself, given my history, but all the same it's a lot more rewarding to finish in public.

The theme of GW Jam #2 was "dreams." Unfortunately, I already did a dream-themed game this year. Fortunately, though, I was reminded of a throwaway vignette from Dragon Warrior VII:

Hondara the Dream Warrior
Though his nephew, the player, did the work, Hondara the drunk claims credit for defeating the Demon Lord

(via the script on the Dragon's Den)

I had been thinking about making a battle-only Dragon-Quest-Like for some time. This gave me a solid excuse to do that while keeping the theme.

As with every jam game, there are many things I wish I had time for. I was going to do some animated damage stuff and screen shake, but I simply ran out of time. Juicing is one of those things that can occupy as much time as you'd let it anyway. The early game, especially for some classes, is also a bit of a drag. Though I am pleased that once you start picking up steam, you're likely to at least reach the first boss. Still, having to redo the early game is a bit annoying for additional runs.

Speaking of classes though, I would be very interested in hearing about wins. I can win reliably with the wizard and monk, and I have registered wins with the cleric and warrior. Though my cleric win was cheesy as hell. I have not yet won with the drunk class though, which may or may not be as designed. I feel like first aid would probably be necessary for a winning run with the drunk, but I'm honestly not the most skilled gamer dude. How have your experiences been?

Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you again for playing and following.
